Demolition of existing buildings on a 4-lot assemblage has finished and design of an intriguing new boutique hotel concept in Nolita has begun. Being an area whose provenance as home to artists and hipsters, Nolita makes it the appropriate setting for avant-garde Dutch hotel company CitizenM's. The brand creators' mission: to bring affordable luxury to the mobile citizens of the world. (Hence the M.) The vibe is youthful, savvy, sophisticated, and expectant of the finer touches that CitizenM hotels deliver—king-size beds, big fluffy pillows, rain showers, wall-to-wall windows, free in-room movies and Wi-Fi and Skype phone rates. But the property's most striking feature may well be the "MoodPad," a tablet device that controls the guest room temperature, window treatments, ambient lighting, alarm and TV. The 300-room hotel is slated to open in Q2 2015.
